Randy's Run advances various goals
McCOOK, Neb. — Randy’s Run 5K and Half-Marathon is held in memory of Randy Andrews, who passed away in 2017 and was an avid long-distance runner.
But for the participants in Saturday’s race at the Red Willow Reservoir, each had their own reason or motivation for doing the event.
Some like Ray and Martha Chmiel are training for the upcoming Lincoln Marathon, having put in 13 or 14 miles....before Randy’s Run even began. Others such as Dustan Dold took a different approach and ran and extra 5K loop or two, after he had already completed the four loops needed for the half-marathon to reach his training mileage.
And some tackled a half-marathon for the first time, including the youngest competitors, Jackson Blomstedt and Davien Hanson.
Others set personal records (PRs) on the 5K course with a few of those crediting the “medals” as motivation.
The “medals” were packages of bison jerky, provided by Darrell Meister, owner of the bison herd located near the reservoir and a McCook High School grad.
Whatever the motivation, nearly 60 runners and walkers finished the race on Saturday and enjoyed beautiful weather and even more beautiful scenery along the way.
Leading the 5K runners was overall winner Justin Felker with a time of 21.59 on a very hilly course. Brandi White led the women in 26.06. In the half-marathon, David Junker finished with a speedy time of 1 hour, 27 minutes while Staci Blomstedt led the women, finishing in an equally impressive 1 hour, 40 minutes.

Randy’s Run is the second of 11 events in the Republican River Fitness Series, a collaboration between the YMCA and Community Hospital.
Next up is the one of the biggest races of the year, the Community Hospital Wellness 5K on Thursday, May 9 at 6 p.m. The event is free, thanks to the generosity of Community Hospital. But the race still counts toward participation points in the fitness series and includes age-group awards for the top finishers.
